Baltimore Orioles, AL East Betting Odds And Preview For 2022 MLB Season

The Baltimore Orioles are in the middle of a lengthy rebuild, and the 2022 season may be another uphill battle for Maryland’s MLB franchise. The O’s play in arguably the toughest division in baseball: the American League East. The New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays, and Toronto Blue Jays are all World Series contenders. Not much is expected to come easy for the Orioles.

The good news for Orioles fans is they can now enjoy the opportunity to bet on Major League Baseball legally in Maryland. Retail sports betting launched in the winter, and mobile sports betting is expected to go live later this year. While Maryland bettors may not be able to bet on the Orioles from their mobile devices quite yet, they can still bet on the O’s in person. As of April 4, the hope is that mobile betting is up and running in Maryland before the end of the 2022 MLB season.

AL East Betting Odds

The AL East is expected to be the toughest division in baseball. Four teams have projected win totals over 85, and the Blue Jays have the best odds to win the American League pennant (+450). Toronto also has the second-best odds at the World Series (+900), trailing only the Los Angeles Dodgers (+475).

The chart below shows the current division, league, and World Series odds for each AL East team on DraftKings as of Monday, April 4. Keep in mind that these odds can fluctuate throughout the course of the season.

AL East Division WinnerAmerican League Pennant WinnerWorld Series WinnerRegular Season Win Total
Toronto Blue Jays+170+450+90092.5
New York Yankees+200+475+90091.5
Tampa Bay Rays+320+750+170089.5

Baltimore Orioles+15000+20000+3000062.5

Orioles Betting Preview For The 2022 Season

Oddsmakers do not have much faith in the Orioles this season. Baltimore’s regular-season win total is at 62.5 on DraftKings, which is rock bottom in the MLB. The O’s have the longest odds of winning the American League pennant (+20000). They are alongside the Pirates for the longest World Series odds (+30000). On FanDuel, Baltimore has the best odds to finish the regular season with the worst record in all of baseball (+195).

While sportsbooks may not be expecting much success from the O’s this season, Orioles fans may have some exciting moments to look forward to. John Means is a top-tier starting pitcher, and his talent was on full display when he tossed the 10th no-hitter in Orioles history last May. Means has dealt with some injuries recently, but if he can stay healthy, he could be a legitimate Cy Young candidate. He is currently +5000 to win the award.

Cedric Mullens is another young star for Baltimore. Last season, Mullens became the first player in Orioles history to hit 30 home runs and steal 30 bases in a season. Mullens is the face of the franchise and expects to have another strong season. Rookie Ryan Mountcastle finished with 33 home runs and was 6th in the AL Rookie of the Year voting, and his serious pop helps provide some stability to the middle of Baltimore’s order with Trey Mancini.

Orioles’ fans should also finally see Adley Rutschman and Grayson Rodriguez in the big leagues at some point this season. Rutschman was the first overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft, while Rodriguez is the team’s top pitching prospect. Rutschman is +600 to win AL Rookie of the Year, while Rodriguez is +4000.

Best Bets For The Orioles

Over the last four seasons, the Orioles have lost 368 games. That is the most in the league over that span. While there could be a bright future ahead, the bottom line is that the O’s are deep into a rebuild that is still taking time.

Aside from Means, the Baltimore pitching situation does not warrant much confidence right now. To put it simply, the Orioles had the worst pitching staff in baseball last season. In total, the O’s allowed an average of 5.90 runs per game in 2021, which was by far the most of any team.

The Orioles did not do much to bolster their pitching staff over the offseason. They did sign free agent Jordan Lyles, but his 5.15 ERA last season leaves much to be desired. The potential addition of Rodriguez to the mix is certainly a positive. But there are still many holes in this Baltimore pitching staff.

The Orioles won 52 games last season. After not doing much this offseason, the 2022 season could be another uphill battle. Their win total is 62.5 on DraftKings, and we recommend taking the under. It’s tough to see the O’s improving by 11+ games from last season, even with the upside of young prospects. It also doesn’t help that the AL East is expected to be a gauntlet. The Yankees, Red Sox, Rays, and Blue Jays could all eclipse 90 wins, making life even tougher for the Orioles.

Consider taking the under on Baltimore’s win total of 62.5.
