Baltimore Orioles Ace John Means Out For Season Needing Tommy John Surgery

The Baltimore Orioles suffered a big loss this weekend when it was announced that they will have to play the rest of the season without starting pitcher John Means. The 28-year-old left-hander has been the ace of the Baltimore staff for the last few seasons and was an All-Star in 2019. Means tweeted on Saturday that he will miss the remainder of the season and will require Tommy John surgery.

He had made a pair of starts this season, tossing eight innings and striking out seven while posting an ERA of 3.38.

Means was one of the better left-handed pitchers in baseball last season. He finished the year with a 6-9 record, but posted a solid 3.62 ERA across 26 starts and 146.2 innings. The highlight of the season came on May 5, when Means tossed the 10th no-hitter in Orioles history.

Means entered the 2022 season with high hopes, and was +5000 to win the AL Cy Young Award on Opening Day.

How Does John Means’ Absence Affect Baltimore Orioles Futures Odds?

In the gauntlet that is the AL East, the Orioles had long odds to make the postseason even with Means on the mound every fifth day. On Opening Day, the Orioles were +15000 to win the AL East, +20000 to win the American League pennant, and +30000 to win the World Series. Baltimore’s over/under for regular season wins was 62.5 on DraftKings.

Along with Means’ injury, Baltimore’s 6-10 start does not have oddsmakers feeling too confident. The O’s are now +25000 to win the AL East, +30000 to win the American League pennant, and +50000 to win the World Series. The Orioles’ World Series odds of +50000 are currently the longest in the league, along with the Diamondbacks and the Pirates.
