Betfred Sports and Long Shot’s sports bar are teaming up to launch a new sportsbook partnership in Frederick, Md.
A temporary Maryland retail sportsbook is set to open up near the Maryland Jockey Club’s off-track betting site by the start of this year’s NFL season in September.
“We were at the forefront of bringing sports betting to Maryland and specifically to Frederick,” Long Shot’s CEO Alyse Cohen said. “We are thrilled to open a sportsbook at Long Shot’s in partnership with Betfred Sports. We are proud that Long Shot’s is one of the premier off-track betting locations in the state, and we look forward to achieving similar success with sports wagering. Long Shot’s will not only boost the local economy but contribute to enhancing the education of our students.”

The temporary spot will be a placeholder for an 8,800-square-foot structure that is expected to be ready early next year. The facility will have in-person betting windows as well as self-serve betting kiosks.
The planned permanent sportsbook will feature a video wall, theatre-style seating, and food and beverage options. Online betting will become available once formally approved by state regulators.
Long Shot’s LLC is based in Frederick County and, according to Cohen, will be the only 100% female-owned business in Maryland to house a sportsbook. Maryland’s sports betting law is unique in the US, as it emphasizes participation by women-owned and minority-owned businesses in the state’s sports betting industry.
Cohen brought in the Maryland Jockey Club OTB in 2019, and Long Shot’s has been located at the Frederick Event Center ever since.
Betfred Has Long History in the UK
Betfred Group is a United Kingdom-based sportsbook that has been in operation since 1967. The Group was founded by brothers Fred and Peter Done and operates more than 1,400 betting locations in the UK as well as mobile products in Spain.
In 2019, Betfred Group launched Betfred USA Sports to compete in the new and expanding US sports betting market. Betfred Sports is currently a licensed operator in Iowa, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Louisiana, and Arizona.
Pending regulatory approval, it will soon be up and running in Maryland, Washington, and Nevada.
“We identified Long Shot’s very early when searching for a Maryland partner,” Betfred Sports Chief Operating Officer Bryan Bennett said. “When combining Betfred’s 50 years of bookmaking experience and Long Shot’s success with off-track betting, we believe this will be a formidable partnership to compete in the Maryland sports betting space.”
There are currently five live retail sports betting locations in Maryland as the state continues to wait for online betting. Maryland has the potential for up to 47 retail sports betting licenses and 60 mobile licenses that can be issued.
In June, Gov. Larry Hogan pressured the Sports Wagering Application Review Commission (SWARC) to have mobile wagering ready for the upcoming NFL season. Still, the process has been slow, and there’s no indication that the goal will be met.
