While it’s a few months too early to sing, “Take me out to the ballgame,” it’s no longer too early to sing “Take me out to the sportsbook” in the nation’s capital.
That became a reality on Monday when BetMGM opened a retail sportsbook at Nationals Park, home of the Washington Nationals.
BetMGM’s sportsbook becomes the first retail sportsbook to be connected to a Major League Baseball stadium. The Chicago Cubs and DraftKings have partnered on a sportsbook at Wrigley Field, but it is slated to open in time for the 2023 season.

While the sportsbook will be open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to midnight, fans in the stands at Nationals Park won’t be able to access the sportsbook from the stadium. Fans, however, will be able to place live wagers on the game in progress from inside the stadium using the BetMGM app.
The 4,000 square-foot facility is located in the space previously known as Center Field Social, across Center Field Plaza from the Nationals Team Store. The sportsbook has a capacity of 187. Visitors will be able to watch events unfold on 40 big-screen TVs with live odds boards that update throughout the game.
There are six betting windows in addition to betting kiosks. There are also full-service options for food and drink.
“We’re constantly pushing the boundaries to deliver sports fans unique experiences, and that’s just what we’ve done with the new BetMGM Sportsbook at Nationals Park,” Adam Greenblatt, BetMGM’s CEO said in a statement. “Whether fans are attending baseball games or looking for a place to watch any sporting event, the BetMGM Sportsbook at Nationals Park is bound to be one of the most engaging sports viewing environments in the District.”

Existing Partnership Grows Stronger
BetMGM launched its mobile sports betting app in Washington, D.C., in June 2021, allowing users to place wagers within a two-block radius of Nationals Park.
“The BetMGM Sportsbook at Nationals Park represents the newest way in which we are providing our fans with the best experiences in sports and entertainment,” Alan Gottlieb, chief operating officer of Lerner Sports, said in a statement. “Upon its opening, the sportsbook immediately becomes one of the neighborhood’s premier venues for both the savvy bettor and casual fan to watch the top events in an upscale and electric atmosphere.”
The Nationals announced BetMGM as their exclusive sports betting partner in January 2021. That was an expansion of a relationship that began with a marketing partnership in 2017, according to the Washington Post.
Capital One Arena, Audi Field and Entertainment and Sports Arena are the other venues in the District eligible for a Class A license, the Post reported. The Class A license restricts competitors from taking mobile wagers within a two-block radius.
Greenblatt says the DMV (shorthand for the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia region) showcases BetMGM’s approach to expanding their platform.
“They can utilize the BetMGM mobile app anywhere in Virginia, can visit the newly opened retail sportsbook at MGM National Harbor in Maryland, and now in D.C., they can access the first sportsbook connected to a Major League Baseball stadium. We’ve established great partnerships that allow us to bring these one-of-a-kind touchpoints to the DMV.”
