Deshaun Watson To The Washington Commanders? DraftKings Odds Say Yes

The Washington Commanders could use a superstar quarterback like Deshaun Watson. With the talent the Commanders have on defense and at some of the skill positions on offense, many believe Washington could be a star quarterback away from becoming competitive. Maryland sportsbooks might even see the Commanders as a Super Bowl contender.

Of course, everyone wants a superstar like Watson lining up behind center, but it’s the Commanders that DraftKings Maryland has listed as the favorite to acquire him from the Houston Texans.

The odds for Watson to land with Washington are +300, but Tampa Bay, which needs to replace the recently-retired Tom Brady, is close behind at +350. After that, the Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints are tied for third at +900. The Texans, Denver Broncos, and Minnesota Vikings are all listed at +1000.

Why Deshaun Watson To The Commanders Could Work

It is not hard to understand why oddsmakers at DraftKings have made Washington the favorite to acquire Watson. Just look at the last two Super Bowl winners. Tampa Bay had a talented roster, but one that was believed to be a quarterback short of becoming a contender. Enter Tom Brady.

He took a 7-9 team, turned it into an 11-5 team, and guided it to victory in Super Bowl 55.

While Jared Goff had taken the Rams to Super Bowl 53, the franchise lost faith in his ability to get the team back to the Super Bowl. Like the Buccaneers, many believed the Rams had enough talent to win the Super Bowl but that it needed someone to lead it there. So, they traded for someone who could — Matthew Stafford.

His season was far from perfect, but he did just what the team acquired him to do. Stafford got them to Super Bowl 56 and led them to victory.

Two years in a row, a team with a solid roster acquired a superstar quarterback and went on to win the Super Bowl. So, the question becomes whether Washington is just such a team.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Commanders have several talented players at the various skill positions, including WR Terry McLaurin, RB Antonio Gibson, and TE Logan Thomas. The unit is just missing a star at quarterback. Taylor Heinicke was not bad last year, but he was far from great and is certainly not a superstar.

Last season, the defense took a step back and allowed 25.5 points/game (25th in the league). However, the year before it ranked fifth (20.6 points/game). With a better player at quarterback, the offense will do more which will take some of the pressure off the defense, making it easier for the unit to play much better in 2022.

Other Contenders To Land Deshaun Watson

Last season, Watson was interested in going to either the Dolphins, Jets, or Panthers. Since he has a no-trade clause, it’s within his power to control where the Texans trade him. Miami, which has odds of +1400 at DraftKings, led the conversation last year, but it appears committed to Tua Tagovailoa much like the Jets (+4000) are married to Zach Wilson.

The Panthers (+1600) could be in the mix, assuming they are ready to throw in the towel on the Sam Darnold experience.

With Brady retiring, the Buccaneers need a new quarterback (+350). The same is true in Pittsburgh (+900) since Ben Roethlisberger decided to hang his cleats up. New Orleans (+900) has not committed to Jameis Winston or anyone else.

Deshaun Watson May Not Be The Only Available Superstar

Of course, the problem with Watson is his legal situation. He is still fighting 22 civil cases related to sexual misconduct — something no team wants to be associated with. Recent reports claim teams could be willing to trade for him before the civil cases get resolved, but that does not mean he’ll play anytime soon.

Washington needs someone to play next season. Since it is unclear whether Watson can, it may be wiser to pursue other options. In a separate market at DraftKings, Washington has odds of +3500 to be the next team for Packers QB Aaron Rodgers.

The Packers are trying hard to convince Rodgers to stay, so, it might be Deshaun Watson or bust for Washington.
