March Madness Betting In Maryland

If you’re a college basketball fan, the most wonderful time of the year is at hand. March Madness is already in full swing across the US, and sports bettors can take full advantage.

It’s a month of stunning upsets, spectacular plays, and busted brackets aplenty. Many, though, want to have more than their brackets riding on the games. And that’s where Maryland sports betting comes into play.

Whether you want to bet on individual games or place a futures bet on the champion, you can do so in Maryland. The state’s system might not be perfect for all sports bettors just yet, but it will be by March Madness 2023.

Here’s a look at where things currently stand in Maryland when it comes to betting on March Madness.

Is March Madness Betting In Maryland Legal?

Yes. Anyone at least 21 years old can legally bet on college sports, including the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments in the state of Maryland. There are no prohibited forms of sports betting in Maryland.

Does Maryland Have Online Sports Betting?

When it comes to online sports betting in Maryland, patience is a virtue. You can debate that, but patience, in fact, is a necessity.

Online betting has been approved but is months away from launching in Maryland. So, when it comes to March 2022, online betting isn’t an option. If you live close to Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington D.C., or West Virginia, you can venture into those states to take advantage of legal mobile sports betting. You just have to be inside the state lines of a state with legal sports betting to place your bet.

Does Maryland Restrict College Sports Betting?

Getting to a retail sportsbook to wager on March Madness make take some effort, but you’ll feel rewarded when you arrive. And even if you don’t feel rewarded, you’ll definitely be unrestricted.

If you are in New York or New Jersey, you can’t place wagers on any in-state college programs. Maryland has no such restrictions. It hasn’t been a great year for men’s college basketball teams in Maryland, but things can change during the conference tournaments.

So if you’re at a retail sportsbook and think the Maryland Terrapins can turn it around, you can bet on them. Or if you want to cash in regardless, you can also bet on the point spread or a prop bet or two to your liking.

If you’re looking to bet on the women’s tournament, Maryland is 21-8 after losing its Big Ten Tournament opener on Friday afternoon but is expected to be an at-large selection to the NCAA Tournament.

What Type Of Bets Can I Place On March Madness?

In Maryland, you can pick the winner of a game straight up by taking the moneyline. If you feel confident in a team’s performance, you can wager on the favorite to cover the point spread. Or, if you’re feeling good about the underdog, you can bet on it to win the game outright or to cover the spread.

For example, if you take the favorite laying 3.5 points, that team will need to win the game by at least four points for you to win the bet. Conversely, if you bet the underdog, you’ll win the bet if the team wins outright, or loses by three points or less.

You can also place wagers on the total. When you do that, you bet on the total number of points scored in the game. Prop bets are a way to bet on certain statistical outcomes involving a particular team, a player, or a combination thereof. With parlay bets, you combine several different bets into one bet. You must win each “leg” of the bet for your ticket to cash.

And if you don’t want to wait for the tournament itself to start, you can place a futures bet today on which team you think will win the championship.
