Types Of Sports Bets

There are seemingly endless ways to bet on sporting events, but for most major leagues, the most common bet types are moneyline, point spreads, and totals. Moneyline bets involve only outright wins without regard to points. Point spread betting includes a number of points you’re either getting or laying with the bet. Totals include the combined number of points, goals, or runs scored by each team in the game.

In addition, parlays are another popular wager. Parlays include multiple bets (or legs) for two or more outcomes. All legs must hit to cash a parlay ticket. Gambling odds are also offered for futures bets, which are decided by an outcome in the future, like the winner of the Super Bowl or World Series

Moneyline Bets, Spread Bets, And Total Bets

Let’s look at a real-world example of a standard betting line. In this example, we are using last year’s NFL Week 15 matchup between the Baltimore Ravens and Green Bay Packers. The chart below shows the pre-game odds that were listed on Caesars Sportsbook before the game on Dec. 19, 2021.

Green Bay-400  -9 (-110) O 45 (-110)
Baltimore+310 +9 (-110)U 45 (-110)

When betting on the moneyline, you are betting on who you think will win the game. In this scenario, the Packers are -400 on the moneyline, while the Ravens are +310. This means that the Packers are a huge Maryland sports odds favorite. A $100 bet on the Ravens would win $310, while you would need to wager $400 on the Packers in order to win $100 if they win. There are no added points involved with moneyline bets; you just need the team you bet on to win the game in order to receive a payout.

If you don’t feel confident in the Ravens winning the game outright, you could play Baltimore on the spread and get nine points (+9) added to their score. In this scenario, you’d need to bet $110 to win $100. This means that you would need the Ravens to either win the game or lose by 9 points or less in order to cover the spread and make your bet a winner.

When it comes to the total of 45, both teams would need to combine for at least 46 points for the over to hit. Anything below 45 points would allow the under to cash.

Which moneyline, spread, and total bets won? Green Bay defeated Baltimore in a thrilling 31-30 game. So, the OVER was the correct play on the total as 61 total points were scored. The Ravens did cover the spread at +9, and Green Bay bettors won on the moneyline.

Parlay Bets

Parlay betting involves betting on multiple outcomes. If you correctly predict all of the outcomes, there can be a significant payout, but these bets are inherently tougher to cash. Let’s stay with the Packers-Ravens game above for our example. A $100 parlay bet on the Ravens +9 and OVER 45 points would have returned $260 at 2.6-1 odds. The sliding scale of odds increases with each added bet at -110. Thus, a three-team parlay would payout at 6-1 odds and a four-team parlay would cash out at 11-1 odds.

Free parlay calculators are available online. These are valuable tools as they help you calculate your parlay odds, implied probability of winning, and potential payout. In addition, sportsbooks display the odds and potential winnings of parlays, so you are able to see each scenario before locking in your parlay.

Prop Bets

Proposition bets, better known as prop bets, are very common in NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL games. As a general rule, prop bets aren’t tied to the outcome of a game. In the NFL, popular prop bets include QB passing yards, QB passing touchdowns, RB rushing yards, and WR receiving yards.

Prop bets especially enter the national discussion every year around the Super Bowl. Sportsbooks often offer a long list of prop bets for the NFL biggest game, which gives bettors seemingly endless ways to bet on the big game. For example, you can bet on the coin toss, length of the national anthem prior to the actual game, as well as the color of the Gatorade that will be dumped on the winning head coach.

Let’s consider an actual prop during the 2021-22 NFL season involving Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers in the game referenced above against Baltimore. Note: Ravens QB Lamar Jackson did not play due to injury.

The prop bet offered by Caesars Sportsbook involved the number of TDs Rodgers would throw for against the Ravens: over 2.5 (+155).

If you believed Rodgers would pass for at least three TDs, a $100 wager would bring back $155 on this prop bet. That did, in fact, happen as Rodgers had three passing scores.

In addition to prop bets based on the performance of individual players, it’s also possible to place prop bets on teams. For example, prop bets are available on the Ravens or their opponent to be the first to score 14, 21, or 28 points in an NFL game. You can also bet on a team to stay under or go over their listed total of points.

Live “In-Game” Betting

Live betting has become an extremely popular sports-betting option. These types of wagers are made when the game is already in progress. The betting odds can fluctuate greatly over the course of a game.

Let’s use a hypothetical NFL game involving the Ravens and the Washington Commanders to illustrate how in-game betting works for Maryland sports odds:

Pre-Kickoff Odds

Let’s say the Ravens enter the game as a 3-point (-3) favorite at standard odds of -110. This means you could bet $110 on either team to win $100 if they cover the spread.

Halftime Odds

At halftime, let’s say that Washington leads Baltimore by a score of 14-10. The odds could now be shifted. In-game odds at this point could look something like the Ravens being 5-point (+5) underdogs standard odds of -125 and Washington being a 4.5-point (-4.5) favorite at standard odds of +130.

Washington began the game as 3-point (+3) underdogs at standard odds of -110, and while it’s winning by four points at the half, the sportsbook is now giving the favored Ravens five points on the adjusted line. If the score remains the same, the Ravens will lose the game but cover against the spread. You’ll need to risk $125 to win $100 on the Ravens at halftime.

This is a basic example of in-game wagering. Sportsbooks also offer live betting on the total of points scored by each team, a combined total of points by both teams, total TDs scored by each team, and total TDs by both teams. Remember that these numbers remain fluid based on how the game plays out, but you lock in your Maryland sports odds at the time your live bet is placed. We recommend treading lightly when starting out with live in-game betting in order to get a feel for how it works.

Best Sports Odds in Maryland

Oddsmakers at each respective sportsbook are responsible for creating the sports odds. They do so with the goal of attracting equal money on both sides of a bet to avoid liability on the game.

It’s important to note that betting odds can vary at different sportsbooks. Once mobile sports betting is up and running in Maryland, major operators such as DraftKings, FanDuel, and BetMGM will have individual betting markets based on bets by their patrons. It pays to shop around for the best sports odds in Maryland, so we recommend downloading multiple sportsbook platforms. This way, you can easily shop around for the best odds. That is also true in the case of sign-up promotions and bonuses for new accounts.

Different sports offer different options for betting, so it’s important to understand the nuances of each respective sport. Women’s soccer fans can take a look at our guide to the NWSL. Below, we’ll take a look at the four biggest professional sports leagues in the United States: NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL.

Which Maryland Teams You Can Bet On?

Maryland NFL and NCAA Football Betting

Football is an extremely popular sport to bet on in the US, and Maryland sportsbooks offer wide betting markets on both college football and NFL games.

The NFL is the modern-day leviathan when it comes to sports betting, as it attracts more eyeballs and money than any other league. One of the most important factors in betting NFL games is staying current with news such as injuries, trades, and matchups.

Maryland bettors have two local teams in the NFL: the Baltimore Ravens and Washington Commanders. The Ravens feature MVP candidate Lamar Jackson at quarterback and are considered a true Super Bowl contender.

Super Bowl LVII Winner

The Super Bowl is the king of all sports betting events. In advance of the Big Game, and all throughout the season, betting on the eventual Super Bowl winner is an extremely popular bet in the futures market.

This type of Maryland sports odds are dynamic as they fluctuate based on the performance of each team throughout the season. Let’s take a look at the top five favorites to win Super Bowl LVII, along with the Baltimore Ravens as a point of comparison.

There are Super Bowl bets available for all 32 NFL teams during the season before teams are eliminated from playoff contention. Back on Oct. 31, the Ravens were +1800 to win it all. This means that if you put $100 on Baltimore to win the Super Bowl then, you’d cash a $1,800 winning ticket (and get your initial $100 back) if the Ravens go on to win Super Bowl LVII.

Maryland MLB and NCAA Baseball Betting

Along with football, baseball is a popular sport to bet on in US markets. Major League Baseball’s 162-game regular season spans from April to October. The playoffs then begin and conclude with the World Series (with Houston Astros beating the Philadelphia Phillies for the WS crown in 2022).

Starting pitchers are the biggest factor in game odds for Major League Baseball. When betting on baseball, be sure to examine them along with a team’s offensive production against left or right-handed pitchers. A popular prop bet involves the Over/Under on the number of strikeouts a starting pitcher will have in the game. You can also wager on the total number of hits a pitcher will yield in a game. Similar to first-half bets in the NFL, you can bet the spread, moneyline, or total for the first five innings of any MLB game.

Along with MLB betting odds, many sportsbooks also offer odds for individual college baseball games, as well as the College World Series (in June).

Maryland NCAA Basketball Betting

College basketball has a strong hold on the US betting market, and it is sure to be popular in Maryland. The Maryland Terrapins play in the Big Ten Conference, and the program has a rich tradition. Likewise, the Big East’s Georgetown Hoyas are a name brand program in the DMV region.

March Madness is a betting extravaganza in Maryland and across the country. Here’s a look at the Maryland sports odds for the men’s basketball tournament in April 2023. Listed below are the favorites compared to Maryland.

NCAA Tournament Winner

As of Oct. 31, the Terrapins were +15000 to become NCAA champs. In essence, this means that if you put $100 on Maryland to win the NCAA Tournament in men’s basketball then, you’d cash a $15,000 winning ticket (and get your initial $100 back) if the Terrapins win it all in April 2023.

Maryland NBA Betting

Along with college basketball, Maryland bettors will also be able to place bets on NBA games involving the Washington Wizards (led by elite scorer Bradley Beal) or any other team. One betting tip for the NBA involves finding teams playing back-to-back games on consecutive nights during the regular season. The grind of an 82-game season can take its toll particularly late in the season.

NBA Finals Winner

When the Finals start next summer, oddsmakers closely follow the action on the court (and at the sportsbooks) to set opening odds for each game of the NBA Finals. The goal is always to post an opening line that will draw equal action on each side of the bet. The sportsbook will then adjust the line accordingly, as the betting public wagers, to try and balance both sides of the ledger.

As of Oct. 31, the Wizards were +40000 to win it all. This means that if you put $100 on Washington then, you’d cash a $40,000 winning ticket (and get your initial $100 back) if the Wizards win the NBA Finals next summer.

Maryland NHL Betting

The National Hockey League also plays an 82-game regular season spanning from October to May. In the NHL, starting goaltenders can be a critical factor in the calculation of game odds. Futures odds are also available for the Stanley Cup.

One popular option for betting on NHL games involves prop bets on individual players. While Maryland doesn’t have an NHL team, the Washington Capitals play just down the Beltway in Washington D.C. The Capitals feature one of the most established stars in all of hockey, Alexander Ovechkin.

Popular prop bets for NHL games include: anytime goal scorer, player shots on goal, and player points. Much like odds for NFL and MLB games, these odds can vary from sportsbook to sportsbook. Betting NHL player prop bets is a great way to enhance your game-watching experience.

Stanley Cup Winner

As of Oct. 31, the Capitals were +3500 to win it all. This means that if you put $100 on Washington, you’d cash a $3,500 winning ticket (and get your initial $100 back) if the Capitals win the NHL Stanley Cup Finals next summer.
