Betting On The Super Bowl In Maryland

Sports betting has made its way to Maryland, and while the rollout has been slower than expected, there is still a lot to be excited about. Retail sports betting is now available, meaning sports fans in Maryland can place their bets in person. As of August, the hope is that mobile betting can launch before the end of 2022. It would be advantageous for Maryland regulators to implement mobile betting in 2022, as that would mean it would be available for Super Bowl LVII in February 2023.

The Super Bowl is often the most-bet singular sporting event in the United States, making it a huge day for both mobile and retail sportsbooks.

Current Super Bowl Odds In Maryland

The NFL preseason is underway, meaning the start of the NFL regular season is right around the corner. The first game of the season takes place on Thursday, September 8, as the Buffalo Bills take on the Los Angeles Rams. That still may be a month away, but it’s never too early to see what the Super Bowl futures market is looking like. The chart below shows the odds for Super Bowl LVII on DraftKings, FanDuel, and Caesars as of August 5:

The Buffalo Bills are the favorite on all three platforms, and they are closely followed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Kansas City Chiefs. Last year’s winner, the Los Angeles Rams, are +1100 to become back-to-back champs on DraftKings and FanDuel, and +1200 on Caesars. Keep in mind that these odds can fluctuate throughout the rest of the offseason, as well as during the regular season and playoffs. Only time will tell if the current favorites stay at the top of the list once the season gets going.

A pair of NFL teams, the Baltimore Ravens and Washington Commanders, have large fan bases in Maryland. On DraftKings, the Ravens are +2200 to win the Super Bowl, while the Commanders are +7000.

Where Can I Bet On The Super Bowl In Maryland?

Betting On The Super Bowl Online In Maryland

Maryland is shaping up to be one of the most diverse sports betting industries in the United States. At full capacity, it’ll allow up to 60 online sportsbook operators, so bettors should expect plenty of choices. Maryland’s roster of online sportsbooks expected to become available in the coming months is already full of big names:

Each of these sportsbooks is a major player in the United States’ sports betting industry, and we expect them to be the first to launch in Maryland. Some of them already have partnerships with resorts and casinos in Maryland, too. In addition to these names, there are many smaller sportsbook companies and new companies that may apply for one of Maryland’s sports betting licenses in the coming months.

When downloading mobile sportsbooks, Maryland residents can take advantage of several welcome bonuses and promotions. For example, bettors can take advantage of BetMGM’s $1,000 risk-free bet or BetRivers’ 100% deposit bonus up to $250.

In addition, once football season arrives, many major sportsbooks will have special football promotions throughout the NFL season that bettors can use. These can include odds boosts, parlay insurance, and risk-free bets. So, bettors should keep an eye out when online sports betting goes live in the state.

Sportsbook Locations In Maryland

Right now, sports bets in Maryland have to be placed in person. In total, 17 retail locations were designated in the Maryland sports wagering law. These include casinos, horse tracks, sports facilities, off-track betting locations, and bingo halls. As of August, sports fans can place their wagers at five land-based casinos and one non-casino site in Maryland. They are:

  • Horseshoe Casino Baltimore (Caesars)
  • MGM National Harbor (BetMGM)
  • Maryland Live! Casino & Hotel (FanDuel)
  • Hollywood Casino Perryville Barstool)
  • Ocean Downs Casino (TwinSpires)
  • Bingo World (BetRivers)

Bettors can place all sorts of NFL bets at these sportsbook locations. Much like with mobile betting, it is important to keep in mind that the odds can fluctuate depending on what location you visit. And as always, make sure not to lose your ticket!

    History Of Baltimore Ravens Championships

The Baltimore Ravens are due for a postseason run. Their last Super Bowl win came in 2013 when they beat the 49ers 34-31. The last one before that was back in 2001 in a blowout win against the Giants. These were proud moments for all of Maryland, and this year, Marylanders are hoping for another one.

Quarterback Lamar Jackson may be one of the best hopes for Baltimore to win the Super Bowl this year. In 2019, he was the NFL’s MVP. He set multiple records on the field, including becoming the youngest quarterback to earn a perfect “passer rating” and becoming the first player to rush for over 60 yards in seven consecutive games. Since gaining more experience on the football field, Jackson has increased the Ravens’ chances of making it to another Super Bowl and winning it all.

NFL Super Bowl Odds And Betting

There are a few different types of bets that bettors will be able to place on the Super Bowl. The main ones are moneylines, point spreads, and point totals. In addition, bettors can also place other bets including futures, player props, game props, team props, parlays and same game parlays.

Perhaps most notably, many major sportsbooks offer what are called “novelty props” for the Super Bowl. These can include bets like the length of the national anthem and what color the Gatorade will be that is poured on the winning head coach after the game.

All in all, there are seemingly endless ways to bet on the Super Bowl.

What Are The NFL Game Lines?

The game lines are moneylines, point spreads, and point totals. When bettors wager on a game or place live bets, these are the wagers they’ll make most commonly. Moneyline bets are wagers on who will win the game. So, bettors who want to bet on Ravens wins can place moneyline bets.

Bettors who are interested in the score have two options. They can place point spread bets, which are bets on whether an NFL team will score more or less than a set number of points. They can also place point total bets, which are bets on what the total number of points scored between both teams will be.

These give Ravens fans chances to bet on the game without having to bet on the opposing team’s victory. So even when the Ravens are clearly outmatched, bettors don’t have to admit it in their wagers.

What Is An NFL Futures Bet?

NFL futures bets can include many different things, but most commonly refer to who will win the Super Bowl. While game lines are set weeks in advance, futures bets are set months in advance. These are high-risk, high-reward bets that can be volatile throughout the season. Other futures include division winner, conference winner, and regular season wins.

So, bettors can cash in on an unlikely winner while the odds are long. Or they can cash in on the obvious winner from the start before the odds dip too low. Calling futures correctly is tough work, so the rewards for doing so are fantastic.

What Is A Super Bowl Prop Bet?

Prop bets are fun bets that may not have a direct impact on the game’s final outcome. Popular Super Bowl prop bets include passing yards for quarterbacks, receiving yards for wide receivers or tight ends, and who you think will score a touchdown. And as mentioned earlier, novelty props are also an option.

No matter what you are looking to bet on in the Super Bowl, odds are there is a prop bet for it.

How Super Bowl Betting Odds Are Calculated

Betting odds on the Super Bowl are revised and adjusted up to the minute. Super Bowl futures change throughout the season as oddsmakers collect more data about the NFL teams. Even though the odds have house advantages built-in, they reflect a rough estimation of the team’s chances of winning or making the spread. (Once bettors inject their opinions and money, that stops being true). So throughout the season, the Super Bowl odds for both the Ravens and Commanders will change alongside everyone else’s.

These odds are set by oddsmakers who know football well and who know how to keep sportsbooks profitable. They respond to trades, injuries, and other major developments that can change the balance between teams. They’re as engaged in the games, stats, players, and teams, if not more engaged, than the biggest NFL fans. They couldn’t set the odds any other way.

How To Place Online Super Bowl Bets In Maryland

When mobile sports betting goes live in Maryland, bettors will be able to place bets online from anywhere in-state. First, bettors have to find a sportsbook. They can choose one based on welcome bonuses, ongoing promotions, or odds trends. Once bettors find a sportsbook, they can register accounts, make their first deposits, and after their first wins, cash out.

After bettors download an app, they’ll need to create their accounts. It’s mostly the same as creating an online account at any other site. However, after bettors create their logins and input their information, they’ll provide all or part of their social security numbers.

This allows sportsbooks to check who they’re sending winnings to. They can’t accept money from money launderers, terrorists, or other prohibited bettors. So they have identity checks in place. (It’s also why withdrawals take longer than deposits.) After that, bettors set their security questions, check a few boxes, and they’re ready to make their first deposits.

To make their first deposits, bettors select their desired deposit method. They vary across sportsbooks, but the common ones include bank transfers, credit and debit cards, Play+ cards, VIP Preferred e-checks, and PayPal. Then bettors select the amount they want to deposit and the money will be ready immediately.

Withdrawals are another story. If bettors have winnings to withdraw, bettors can place a withdrawal request. They select their withdrawal method and the amount they’d like to withdraw. Bettors will have to wait three to five business days for the funds to move, though. The identity checks are thorough, and the price that sportsbooks pay for awarding winnings to a prohibited bettor is staggering. So, bettors have to be prepared to wait for their winnings.

But after that, repeating the cycle is simple.

Super Bowl Betting in Maryland FAQs

Is betting on the Super Bowl legal in Maryland?

It’s legal, but bets can only be made in person right now. The hope is that online sports betting will become available in Maryland before the end of 2022. That’ll give bettors ways to branch out from casual office pools. Bettors will also be able to bet at sportsbooks in whichever states they’re legal in. So, if bettors travel to another state, they may have sportsbooks to bet at when they reach their final destinations.

How old do Maryland bettors have to be to bet on the Super Bowl?

Maryland bettors need to be 21 years of age or older in order to participate in sports betting in the state. Retail sportsbooks are already hosted in places with liquor licenses, so sportsbooks aren’t being treated like lottery, parimutuel, or charity bingo. Sportsbooks require players to provide proof that they are at least 21 before entering.

Where can I bet on the Super Bowl if I’m in Maryland?

Right now, all sports bets in Maryland have to be made in person. As of August, Super Bowl bets can be placed at five retail casinos and one non-casino site in Maryland:

In addition to these six locations, it would not be surprising to see more retail betting sites become available in the coming months. Bettors will also be able to bet on mobile sportsbook apps and websites once they launch in Maryland. That’ll give bettors access to sports betting from anywhere in the state.

Is betting on the Super Bowl safe?

Yes. Licensed sportsbooks like FanDuel and DraftKings are some of the most secure and heavily regulated commercial products in the United States. Their digital infrastructure is tested by the state’s gaming commission before launch, so bettors only have safe products to use. Sportsbooks also want to continue launching in new states, so they’re incentivised to prioritize data security. It’s best to avoid illegal and offshore betting sites for security reasons.

Do Maryland sportsbooks offer live in-game betting during the Super Bowl?

Yes. Live betting is the bread and butter of many sportsbooks. For them, Super Bowl live betting will be one of the most profitable activities of the year. Live betting is often put front and center on a sprotsbook’s home page. When the big day comes, Maryland sportsbooks will make sure that live betting is not only available, but easily accessible.

Can I bet on off-field events during the Super Bowl?

Yes. The Super Bowl is known for having a larger than usual betting market. Prop bets cover some of the off-field events that are fun—and at this point, traditional—to bet on. For example, bettors will likely be able to place an over/under on the length of either the national anthem or the high note just before the end. Bets on the coin toss and color of Gatorade dumped on the winning coach are common, too. Whatever bettors are looking for, there’s probably a fun bet available for them.

Who is the current favorite to win the 2023 Super Bowl?

As of August, the Buffalo Bills are the favorite to win Super Bowl LVII on most major sports betting platforms. They are +600 on DraftKings and Caesars, and +650 on FanDuel. They are followed closely by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Kansas City Chiefs, and Green Bay Packers.
