Report: Orioles Intend to Sign New Lease to Keep Team in Baltimore

The Baltimore Orioles are planning to sign a new lease at Camden Yards to remain in Baltimore.

Oriole Park at Camden Yards opened in 1992 and has been the home of the Baltimore Orioles since that day. It will continue to be the home of the Orioles as the Baltimore Sun reported that the team will be extending its lease.

The report says that Orioles chairman, John P. Angelos, sent a memo to front office staff announcing the intent to renew the lease.

Oriole Park at Camden Yards is owned by Maryland Stadium Authority which also owns M&T Bank Stadium, the home of the Baltimore Ravens

This news comes not long after the rumors started to swirl that the Orioles could be moved to Nashville due to family turmoil. With the intent to extend the lease it looks like Angelos is backing up his commitment to stay in Baltimore.

Angelos’ brother Louis Angelos has filed a lawsuit against John and their mother for wrongfully taking over control of the team, a suit that has not yet been settled.

Retail Sportsbook Coming To Camden Yards

In August the Orioles announced a partnership with SuperBook Sports. Part of the agreement means that SuperBook will open a retail sportsbook at Camden Yards in the near future. It’s expected to open at some point next year.

The sportsbook will allow fans the opportunity to place bets but will also have food and drinks.

Earlier this year, Nationals Park opened the first sportsbook connected to a Major League Baseball venue when the club opened the BetMGM Sportsbook

Since then more have been announced:

  • Citi Field, Caesars Sportsbook (New York Mets)
  • Chase Field, Caesars Sportsbook (Arizona Diamondbacks)
  • Wrigley Field, Draftkings Sportsbook (Chicago Cubs)

When the sportsbook opens it’ll be the first to open inside of a sports stadium in Maryland. The Washington Commanders are also expected to open a retail sportsbook inside of FedEx Field.

Orioles 2022 Season

As the MLB regular season comes to a close, Orioles fans have a lot to be excited about for next season.

Baltimore had a surprising season, finding a good bit of success but still failing to qualify for the MLB playoffs. Going into the season there were fairly low expectations for the Orioles but they exceeded them.

With one game left to go the Orioles will finish with a winning record having gone 83-78 this season, the first time they’ve had more than 80 wins since 2016. It’s a big leap from the disappointing 2021 season when they went 52-110.

Baltimore was in the playoff hunt until the end but was ultimately knocked out of the postseason when the Seattle Mariners defeated the Oakland A’s to secure their spot in the playoff bracket.

In terms of hitting, the Orioles ranked 18th with a team batting average of .236 with 171 home runs on the season. As a team, they had an ERA of 3.97, which ranked 17th in the league.

After shocking baseball fans this season, the Orioles will have much higher expectations going into the 2023 season.
