Odds For 2022 Preakness Stakes At Pimlico

The 147th running of the Preakness Stakes is slated for race number 13 at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland on Saturday, May 21, with post time set for 7:01 p.m. ET.

One strategy for betting a horse race like the Preakness Stakes, which is the second stleg of the Triple Crown, is to watch the odds carefully a few days before the event, and if you must, wait until as close to the start as possible to get your bets in.

The odds shown here are from FanDuel Sportsbook as of 2:30 p.m. ET on Friday.

In Maryland, you can bet on which horse will win the Preakness Stakes at the track, OTB facilities throughout the state, or at retail sportsbooks. If you bet outside of the state with FanDuel Racing, the sportsbook is offering a $50 deposit match on your deposit.

Field For 2022 Preakness Stakes

Epicenter, -120

If you prefer to shy away from horses that blow leads, then Epicenter isn’t for you. In the Kentucky Derby, the horse was in the front down the stretch when longshot Rich Strike (+8000) charged by to win.

But the colt does have four wins and two seconds in seven career starts, and experts like Epicenter as the class of a slim field. Rich Strike won’t be among the contenders, as the Derby champion will be chewing on some hay in his barn on Saturday.

Early Voting, +350

These next two horses are good choices for exacta betting: both horses are considered healthy and rested, and some are picking one of them to upset the favorite.

Do you think a horse should rest or race consistently? That’s at the heart of whether Early Voting can win the Preakness. The horse has raced only three times in his career. Granted, he’s won two of them, and he’s acknowledged to be a fast horse. Early Voting has lots of “Early” speed, although he was passed in the stretch last time out.

Secret Oath, +450

The only filly in the race is trained by the legendary D. Wayne Lukas, who has guided his horses to 20 Breeders’ Cup wins. He’s also a six-time Preakness Stakes winner, but jockey Luis Saez has never won a Preakness despite almost 2,700 career wins. Last year, Saez rode the winning horse at the Belmont Stakes, Essential Quality.

Simplification, +600

Simplification has three wins in eight career starts. But, he’s also been racing regularly since October, and might not be fresh. He came in a respectable fourth at the Kentucky Derby.

Creative Minister, +1000

Want a real sleeper? Creative Minister might be a winning horse just waiting for his moment. He comes into the Preakness off a three-length victory in an optional claiming race at Churchill Downs earlier this month. His only other career races, both as a three-year old: a second-by-a-neck finish in his debut and a victory at Keeneland by 1 ½ lengths to break his maiden.

Armagnac, +1200

Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. will ride this horse, and he has something to avenge: a second in last year’s Preakness on Midnight Bourbon.

Skippylongstocking, +2000

This horse drew the 9th post position for the Preakness, and it seems like experts are not paying much attention to him. But one of the most venerable jockeys will be riding Skippy: Junior Alvarado, who has more than 1,500 career wins.

Happy Jack, +3000

As Darren Cooper points out over at PlayVirginia, the longest longshot to win the Preakness was a horse name Master Derby, who was 23-1 (+2300) back in 1975 at Pimlico.

Could Happy Jack make longshot bettors happy on Saturday and set a record? Seems like 2022 could be the Year Of The Upset, no? Your mileage may vary, but this is the horse I would toss $20 on.

Fenwick, +5000

This three-year old has yet to live up to the expectations of a Curlin-sired colt, with just one win in six starts. Entering the Preakness, Fenwick has the longest of odds. Do you believe in blood? Curlin won the 2007 Preakness Stakes. A winning $50 bet would pay $2,500 at these odds.
