Maryland is the latest state that’s getting ready to give sports betting the green light. Governor Larry Hogan signed the bill into law in May. The bill creates a commission in charge of setting specific industry rules and awarding the 60 mobile and online gaming licenses.
Regulations on sports betting were passed by the state during the summer. The publication of these regulations requires a 30-day public discussion period. The Sports Wagering Application Review Commission (SWARC) rewards licenses to the gambling operators that apply. Approval is subject to an investigation by the state lottery agency.
SWARC has already allowed 17 different brick-and-mortar locations to continue through the process. Other vendors must wait for an official application process to be launched. Receiving licensure can take between one to two years.
Maryland sports betting is expected to launch by the end of the year. Governor Hogan said that wagering won’t be possible before the football season begins. However, he expects to have sportsbooks live prior to the playoffs. Here’s what we know about the sportsbooks expected to launch and their bonus offers.

Types Of Sports Betting Bonuses In Maryland
When Marylanders finally get sports betting, they’ll see different types of bonuses. They’ll see new-player and welcome bonuses, which attract bettors to new sportsbooks. Bettors will also find smaller ongoing bonuses throughout popular sports seasons.
Finally, they’ll see loyalty and VIP programs that reward large and consistent bettors. No matter the betting style, bettors will find something that fits their betting preferences. Here are the specific types of bonuses Marylanders will find when sports betting finally comes to town.
Risk-free bets are one of the two most common types of bonuses. They can be either welcome bonuses or ongoing bonuses. BetMGM and FanDuel have risk-free bets as welcome bonuses. However, bettors can also find risk-free bets like DraftKings’ $100 risk-free bet in return for referrals.
Often, risk-free bets will only be available for bettors’ first wagers. However, bettors also have to opt-in sometimes. That’s especially true with ongoing bonuses. Bettors actually have to read the terms and conditions for sportsbook bonuses. There are common terms, but they can change from promotion to promotion.
Deposit bonuses are named a little misleadingly. Bettors have to deposit a certain amount to qualify for a deposit bonus. However, there are other terms, too. Bettors’ first deposits are usually the only ones that count toward the deposit bonus. That first deposit sets the number of bonus credits that bettors can get.
But to get them, bettors have to place bets. There’s usually a playthrough requirement that slowly releases site credits. DraftKings’ deposit bonus releases $1 for every $25 that bettors wager.
Bettors will usually only find deposit bonuses in the form of welcome bonuses. Since deposit bonuses reward bettors over time, they don’t work as well for ongoing promotions during specific seasons.
Loyalty programs reward bettors who consistently bet big. BetRivers offers a loyalty program that takes a bettor’s rolling average wager amount and sets bettors in a reward tier. Reward tiers unlock special features like exclusive bonus offers and expedited withdrawals. It keeps the biggest bettors happy and maximizing BetRiver’s revenue.
For high-rollers, VIP and loyalty programs may be worth the investment. However, they’re only worth it if bettors wager consistently like they normally would. Bettors who blow money they don’t have won’t realize gains from a sportsbook VIP program.
One of the most impressive loyalty programs comes from Caesars Sportsbook. Caesars new app is linked to the Caesars Rewards program. Bettors will receive points towards their Rewards when they place bets on the app, win or lose.
Bettors will sometimes find small bonuses that accompany large bonuses. These no-deposit bonuses are free promotions from sportsbooks that go to new or existing users. They’re usually $10 to $50 in site credits. Most bettors will get little mileage out of those small amounts.
How To Claim Online Sports Betting Bonuses In Maryland
Depending on the bonus, bettors will either have to create a sportsbook account or opt into a bonus under the sportsbook’s promotions page. Finding a sportsbook is easy. Googling Maryland sportsbooks when sports betting goes live will bring every exciting sportsbook up like WynnBet and Caesars. At least, the big brands will rank high.
From there, bettors can decide which welcome bonuses they want to take advantage of. Those welcome bonuses will be advertised front and center to draw bettors in. Bettors can access sportsbooks through websites or from iOS and Android apps.
Once bettors download the app or access the website, they’re ready to create sportsbook accounts. Creating sportsbook accounts is easy. Bettors go through three steps to input their login information and their personal information. Sportsbooks ask for social security numbers, which can put some bettors off.
However, sportsbooks must adhere to strict know-your-customer rules to make sure they’re only awarding money to legitimate bettors. Once that’s done, bettors can make their first deposits and claim their welcome bonuses.
But bettors should check their bonus’ terms and conditions before betting. They don’t have to read the whole page, but they need to check whether their first deposits will affect their bonuses. (Although, they almost always will.)
Bettors should also adjust their expectations on withdrawals. They can take a few days to process because sportsbooks must ensure they’re not sending money to terrorists. (Seriously, sportsbooks are covered under the Patriot Act.)
Bettors must make sure they click on the sportsbook site and not the daily fantasy site. These are separate services that do not cross over. Also, consider any limits on deposit bonuses and risk-free returns. These are usually available for a limited time, generally between one to two weeks before they become void.
Maryland Sports Betting FAQs
21. Maryland’s sports betting bill prohibits bettors younger than 21 from betting. 18-year-olds can play bingo, play the lottery, bet on horse racing. But they’ve been iced out of sports betting. Apparently, sports betting is more like casino gaming than bingo, the lottery, or horse racing in Maryland. Young Marylanders will just have to wait until they can drink to register for online sportsbooks.
Yes. Bettors can create accounts at as many sportsbooks as they want and claim the welcome bonuses at all of them. However, bettors can only creste one account per sportsbook. Making any more than that will draw the ire of sportsbooks. There’s no good reason to create multiple accounts at the same sportsbook, and sportsbooks know it. As long as bettors are playing honestly, they have nothing to worry about.
It depends on the sportsbook. DraftKings’ deposit bonus has a $25 playthrough requirement for every $1 in site credits. However, another deposit bonus could have a $15 playthrough requirement for every dollar. It changes depending on the bonus. Risk-free bets don’t have playthrough requirements. (If bettors find one that does, it’ll be a novelty.) Bettors have to check the fine print to make sure they know what to expect from their bonuses.
Bonus abuse is creating multiple accounts to take advantage of the same welcome bonus multiple times. Although sportsbooks have ongoing promotions, they’re all smaller and riskier than welcome bonuses. That tempts some bettors to create multiple accounts to take advantage of sportsbooks. However, sportsbooks are good at catching it, and can probably figure out if a bettor used his wife’s social security number to get a $1,000 risk-free bet.
Don’t risk it.
New members at DraftKings Sportsbook can now receive a $50 free bet for making a deposit of $5 or more in addition to the welcome bonus which is a 20% deposit bonus up to $1,000. That means that for every $5 bettors deposit, they’ll get the opportunity to earn $1 in site credits. So for the full $1,000, bettors would have to deposit $5,000. But after that, bettors have to wager $25 to actually get $1 in site credits. That means bettors have to wager $25,000 to get the $1,000. The deposit bonus isn’t to get a lump sum of cash. It’s to reward bettors in proportion to their betting activity.
A $1,000 risk-free bet. It’s not really risk-free, though. Bettors have to wager their own money, first. Sometimes, the amount bettors deposit determines how much money they’re eligible to wager “risk-free.” Then bettors place their first bet and get site credits back if they lose. Bettors can lose up to $1,000 at FanDuel on their first bet, and get $1,000 back in site credits. Those site credits can’t be withdrawn though, so don’t bet the car on it.
Yes. They’re everyone’s least favorite parts of cashing in on sportsbook bonuses. Wagering requirements require bettors to wager money before they get their bonus credits. DraftKings requires bettors to wager $25 before bettors get $1. FanDuel requires bettors to wager however much money they want to earn back on a losing bet in site credits. Few welcome bonuses are free. Most require bettors to put skin in the game.
